Whats the best beginner tarantula to buy him...

For his birthday on the 10th of may Im going to make him leave the house all day until 7:30
My excuse will be I want to clean and cook him a lavish dinner without him knowing what it is. One of our friends will take the day off work to have him at his. We will then have a story that he will come back here with him as his dad will pick him up and he going home *the friend*
While he is out a friend of mine Is going to help me decorate the house with birthday items and then we are off to the shop to buy him a tarantula.
Now whats the best one to get? he mentioned a pink toe and yesterday in the shop I had a little look at what they had. They had a chille rose *I think* a beautiful? and a pink knee and pink toe *I should have been more awake*
There was mexican flame one and wow that looked cool!

Just called shop and they suggested Chille Rose or a pink toe. They do the full kits too and said they would reserve for me before the 10th and if one got sold would get another one in...which is WC I always feel a bit guilty about WC ones.

Anyhoo, sound good to you guys? A good choice?

yeah it is I had a pinktoe for my first T but they are way to fast. Thats a good starter arboral. But G.rosea is the best choice for first T. By the way this subject has been moved to other pets .

Anywho, I agree with rose-hairs being a good first tarantula. They're kind of boring "furry rock" pets, but they're beautiful, hardy, and ok to handle. They're venom isn't terribly frightening, either.

Lori's first two Ts were pinktoes, and she absolutely loves the whole Avicularia genus, but they were both WC from Petco and both died after a few months. Pinktoes are a bit more delicate and if they aren't in the best of health (such as most adult WC), it's really hard for them to recover.

And they're incredibly fast.

They're actually pretty slow for arboral species.

Yeah, but not slow for a first tarantula. The first pinktoe I ever experienced managed to dart up my arm and onto my shoulder faster than I could realize what was going on.

It also teleported from Lori's hand to her knee. It was in her hand, and then somehow it was on her knee.

pink toe will be the way to go by far, rather than the rosehair, IMO

I would look around and find more sources to choose from (the BTS is a good start).
I would pick the Brachypelma (mexican flame knee) probably an auratum .

or the ATS...what warren are we not reliable sources? LOL JK.

I'd still suggest not getting a WC pinktoe. Lori was really bummed when her first two tarantulas died.

If you're willing to put out the money for it get the Mexican flame knee. Beautiful T. Brachys are wonderful starter Ts. If you had more time I'd suggest ordering something like a G aureostriata or B albopilosum (I love curlyhairs lol).

andrew made a good point about WC T's, most of your petshops do have WC T's

the mexican flame one looked pretty! but is it a noob Tarantula? I dont want to get something that will give him the run around or be super delicate.
I did ask the shop if they have CB and they said no. The ones they have are "small" so im guessing not that OLD and likely to die a few months after buying.

there pretty easy and forgiving the brachys are and most are pretty docile...

Eddy how many local europeons do you know off hand? thats why I suggested The BTS cuz thats in HER naeck of the woods..

Brachies are great starters, in my opinion.

Lori's didn't die of old age (they were small too). They'd been kept improperly and had a few problems they couldn't molt out of. I'm just worried about pinktoes being too delicate for a first T.

Brachypelma auratum(mexican flame knee)
Most people will just put the first initial and the the name like this B.auratum.
Mantids wrote Brachy's as a general species

"Brachies" is common-speak for the genus Brachypelma; "pinktoes" or "avics" is common-speak for the genus Avicularia.

I will go for something with the word "pink" in it, like pink toe or chile rose...but I keep forgetting which one is prone to throw hairs!
Running fast is fine as his giant day gecko does that but flicking hairs is a no no for me!

I've never seen a rose-hair flick. Brachy? Yes. Rose-hair? No.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. "Rose-hair" almost always refers to Grammastola rosea, the Chillian rose-hair tarantula.

Pinktoes are usually referred to by pinktoe or Avic.
