do cacti qualify as "other pets?"

DILLIGAF if they don't fit! I stole a pack of seeds from my sis and planted them in a deli cup in the same mix I've come up with and am using for substrate and thus far 7 of the "at least 12" have sprouted since I took off saturday morning. actually 3 of them turned up within the few hours after I got back to the house last night. I'll post pix when the camera turns up in my line of sight again

Eh sure I was going to start posting here about my fly traps.

fly traps are cool but I haven't had any luck with keeping them. cacti are a little easier but I ended up losing the last one so hopefully this batch fare well.

Well, if I listed "slime molds" on the description, I think cacti are acceptable.

If you're having trouble keeping carnivorous plants, check these guys out for caresheets. Most people try keeping flytraps as indoor tropical plants when they require outdoor conditions and a wintering period (so I don't know how well they'd survive in LA anyway).

They've been living in a dome...similiar to P.imp set-up

Then they're going to die.

Flytraps and North American pitcher plants are temperate species and can't handle living in a heated terrarium year-round. They also need to be in standing water because they're from swamps.

They have their cooling period in the winter and the dome is simply for humidity.

Hmmm . . . it would be interesting to see how they do.

I had a pet cactus at my dads house when I lived there, he was called Kingston.

I used to have one when I was little and once a year or so it'd flower, it was quite nice.

I've been thinking about getting a fly trap but i'm not sure... I want something to keep flies out of the "bug room" but every now and then my chinese mantid likes to go for a fly around the room..

i got a flytrap the other day, its so cool! there is a half-digested spider in one of the heads..... do they usualy go into hibernation?

I have been told they do, that they need a winter period.

Dont be shocked when that head and leaf dies. I was. I thought they would eat and digest but not themselves!
they digest themselves with the food item.
Once a cricket got out and we found it in the bathroom, it ran over the fly trap and SNAP!
it was gross! after a few days it was oozing gunk and goo from the head

Flytraps are temperate plants and require a wintering period -- it's best for them to be left outdoors year-round, or at least for six months of the year so they can go dormant. If they fail to receive this then they usually die in the spring. Don't be surprised if all the growth above ground level dies off -- it will all come back in the spring.

They also need to be in standing water (not up to the crown of the plant, but just the bottom inch or two of the pot).

Heh, i planted a saguaro cactus about 6 years ago. Its only an inch and a half tall.

its started to look like a deformed penis, anybody knw why lol

That's just the new growth coming "up" before it has a chance to go "out."
