PostSubject: Substrate for scorpions and tarantulas   8/28/2008, 5:07 pm

Hey. Hope this is the right section really. but this doesnt really have a "place"

Adam and I need to move scorplings into new tanks, get others moved about etc etc...such as his T Blondi needs to be put into a bigger tank *not looking forward to that*
But no shop has the coco fibre and we want to get this done!

Would buying Organic compost be ok to use for scorpions and Tarantulas? I just dont know, we have always used the coco fibre

Sorry for the silly questions but I dont know what to suggest to Adam...

We need to super bad!
The scorplings are ready to be taken from mum now, the T Blondi needs more room.
Pandinus Cavimanus needs to be cleaned and redone and introduced with another *yet to buy but its gonna happen soon, think it a male too!*
Gah so much to go!

lol, it started with an emp now you've got Theraphossa blondi's! i'm sure the "spider bedding" form the spider shop is the best thing to use.

i don't need to worry about new substrate for a long time, since I have a massive bag of irish peat moss in the back yard. Very Happy

yeah we have just finished our 50 litre bag of peat. taken us about 2 years to get through though lol so at about a fiver a bag we aint done to bad out of it. It is a good cheap substrate (so long as you microwave it beforehand to kill most nasties that may be lurking in there.)

However we are turning to the 'forest bed' substrate. its better for absorbing the water instead of getting puddles like you do with peat.

Suppose it depends on budget and personal preference at the end of the day. Personally apart from the puddle aspect I have never had any problems with peat with both T's and S's.

And I hope by 'organic compost' you actually meant peat. coz compost (I've been told ANY compost) will make your little babies a wee bit poorly!

I'd use peat if you could. Remember -- "organic" does NOT mean "no pesticides!" And there's lots of stuff that calls itself organic without having been certified by a government agricultural agency.

eeek. we need a microwave! and We did mean compost hahaha
But now we mean peat...but isnt that in the world getting low? read somewhere.
Eugh. We should have kept on top of the substrate. We should never assume the shop will have it when we super need it!

I didnt jump from pandinus imperator to T Blondi. I have a load of other scorpions in between and he has a load of other Tarantulas before getting his T Blondi Smile

ohhh I just assumed as a pandinus, would be ok with others...anyone else housed more then one together before?

I am still nervous about the T Blondi. Gah. It has attutude, seriously. You look at it for too long and POOF it makes hairs fly. it will be bald soon!

But yes, I have now put my foot down and told him to wait a while before getting some more....haha, I can only hope he will listen to me! we are running out of room until we get a shelf system!

Regarding the communal nature of P. cavimanus, I've heard a lot more instances of cannibalism with this species than with P. imperator. I wouldn't risk it.

Actually i had 4 p.emps / 2 h.spins and a p.cavi all in one big 4 foot tank. no deaths other than the female emp taking a dislike to the males advances and a bad shed. The p.cavi was ok in there with all of them.

I did it as an experiment and it worked pretty well. They were all in there together for about 3 years.
