PostSubject: Couple of handling videos i found   8/13/2008, 6:27 am

Good day people!

I'm just a little bored to day, and searched youtube for some video clips.

And i found some clips, and its nothing i would do Razz

Babycurus jacksoni, fair enough its not the worst scorpion to handle, but would not do it.

POECILOTHERIA FASCIATA, something i never want to handle.

I'm sure many of you have seen these before, but i havent, and wanted to share whit all of you Smile
But what do you guys think of handling dangerous scorps and tarantulas?

Have a nice day! Very Happy

Lori handles Pokies all the time -- but it's usually a male that freaked out during a mating attempt and ran up her arm. Razz The males aren't nearly as scary as the females.

After reading the sting reports I would never handle a B. jacksoni, although I almost handled a male when he freaked out as I was trying to move him to a transport container.

Edit: Just watched the videos. The scorp looks like a gravid female -- something I would not want to mess with. Shocked The T was behaving surprisingly calmly, though, for a member of that genus.

I think its ok to handle some arachnids and other animals, but there is a limit, and thats the species that can kill me, or do other big damage to my body.
Anyways, i would not handle Buthids, ever (i think).

Of all the buthids, only around 25 or so are "dangerous" -- I still wouldn't want to handle the majority of them 'cause they're more likely to have a painful sting, and frankly, why risk it?

And while pokies are the only "medically significant" tarantulas, there's no deadly tarantulas. But I still would NOT want to get bitten by an adult female.

I'm very tempted to make a new handling video of my recently matured B. jacksoni(s), but I'm tired and I wanna at least wait until they harden up and eat a meal until I handle them.

Thanks!

Handling B. jacksoni isn't that bad, really. You just need to make sure that when they start going up your arm that you don't put your hand on top of them, or else you're in for a painful surprise. They're very fast little guys in their juvenile instars, as I've observed. Maybe they calm down when they mature. I'm not sure yet. I haven't held my mature specimens yet. There will be a video soon enough, though, so we shall find out! Smile

I'm impatient, so I couldn't wait...

Here's a video that I just took of my 5i male B. jacksoni. The video isn't all that great because I usually use sunlight as my light source, but the sun isn't really out too much today. I accidentally showed my face! I'm such a hairy beast lately...

Also a picture. For whatever reason, my camera deleted the good ones, so I was stuck with this one:

When i first got into scorpions as you know i was sold a mis-ID'd scorp that was a parabuthus pallidus. I used to handle it a lot but after a while i found the best times to handle it when it was at its most docile.... which was pretty much all the time. For something that I gather has rather a painful sting it was remarkably placid.

But a bit older and wiser I just look at them these days, only handling when necessary i.e. rehousing and substrate changes.

The POECILOTHERIA was remarkably placid. Of all the tarantula species they are my favourite. We only have one ornamental - the red slate. would have more but due to the nature of them we daren't have any more with having young kids.

I handle my jacksonii but i've also been tagged. Pretty painful sting but didn't last very long at all.

I don't even know if I'm allergic yet silent. I've been keeping scorps for almost a year and have yet to get tagged by one.

It's an experiance I personally like to try but the B.jacks was an accident. Stupid container lid didn't want to come off and when it did everything landed on my shirt so the scorp scrambled like crazy and cought in on it's way up my sleeve when it tagged me.

Funny you mention it not lasting, Eddy . . . IIRC, the reports I read showed the effects lasting for hours if not a day or more.

And Brandon, find me ONE well-documented case of someone experiencing anaphylaxis from their first scorpion sting.

. . . . Still waiting, Brandon.

. . . find it yet?

I didn't think so. Wink

Some experts doubt it's even possible to be allergic to scorpion venom, though it IS possible to develop a sensitivity to it over time, and become worse with each subsequent sting. This tends to be the case with a lot of venoms (but I believe it is possible to develop a resistance to snake venom through increased exposure, as there is at least one well-documented case of a herper who regularly injects himself with venom to avoid complications if he is bitten).

The pain lasted about five minutes. Now if your talking about C. sculpt? That LASTED for days. But i was talking about B. jacks.
