Emp Babies Empty
PostSubject: Emp Babies   Emp Babies Empty10/16/2014, 3:59 pm

I'm curious; what is the normal gestation period for an emp? I've had my female for over a year now without any other scorps. I came in to work this morning (I keep her in my office) and was surprised to see several white babies on her back. I thought maybe I had overfed her; I never gave a thought to her being gravid. Anyway, just wanted to know.

About that long. It's usually around a year, give or take a couple of months. She probably mated with a male in the tank she was in at the pet shop, or was already gravid when she was collected.

One more question; how long before their first feed?

They'll be soft, blobby white things for around 2 weeks, during which they can't eat and can't really move properly. They use stored nutrients during this time.

After this time they will begin to moult to 2i. Don't feed straight away as their exoskeleton won't have hardened. Leave it several days to a week, when the babies begin to leave the mother and wander around, and then offer food. You can either give them appropriately sized prey, or larger pre-killed food. The mother may also catch food and offer it to her young.

Last silly question; seeing as having slings is new to me, can Mom be fed soon? I have not put a cricket in her enclosure for about a week and I would rather not see her eat her babies.

Hey congrats on the babies! Yes you can feed her at this time to replenish lost energy but you can wait some more for the babies to all go down from her back too for her to avoid accidentally pinching her babies
