Another (smaller) scorpion trip

Spent a few days near Bethulie in the Eastern Cape of South Africa and of course had some time to see what I could dig up scorpion wise. It was pretty cold but I did manage to find a few species and other critters as well.

Hadogenes trichiurus:

The Hadogenes hide between the cracks of the rocks while the Opistophthalmus make burrows like these underneath rocks:



Uroplectes triangulifer female:



Parabuthus planicauda female:



P.planicauda is one of the smaller Parabuthus species but this female was huge in comparison to the others:


U.triangulifer and P.planicauda habitat, both are found by just flipping rocks:





Not a bad way to spend a few days imo

Do you also "change the scene" by turning as many rocks as possible...LOL

I really need to spend more time in identifying our own species here in Namibia...there are too many species in your country that look the same(to me)...

Hahaha, definitely Gert, even though I flip the rock back into it's original position I know where I've been the previous day so it is helpful in a way

I often come accross rocks already turned over by baboons....

From my side; I have to admit I am also one of those “nuts” doing it for fun! And I have even drawn my 3 boys in assisting…they would start a fight who was seeing the big boulder first…LOL
Obviously the UV search still seems to be the most adventurous of them all!

On the other hand how ever, I am struggling to get hold of the correct people here in Namibia, to advice me on the correct ID and if in need, add new specimens to our archives…
We unfortunately have no people who are seriously into our scorpion and spider fauna. Now, at least, Shodowfoot has given me excellent references, to professional people who are very “jacked up” in terms of scorpions in Namibia…

So, now the scorpion hunt will even be intensified in our family…  

Mostly for fun Callum but the experience will help one day as I will be studying Zoology starting next year. Scorpion nuts always welcome! They will have the privilege of sleeping in my scorpion room haha.
I agree Gert, down here in SA it's the same, no one really interested in scorps, only people that are interested in reptiles and amphibians.
