My name is Spencer, been a lurker for a while, decided it was finally a good time to make an account since 4 out of 5 of my striped tail scorps (Hoffmannius Spinigerus) had slings within the same week. haha I'm looking for some info on selling and shipping legally. Was wondering if someone would give me some info,or direct me to somewhere i could find that info on here. Thank you =)

Hey Spence you can send them to me since were both in Cali Wink. You might want to do a search on how to ship I think there might be a tutorial. It's very easy you can put them in small delicups lined with paper towels, add a drop of water for hydration and cover it with another paper towel. At that point you just ship and pack regularly. Keeping in mind weather you might have to add a heat pack (711 hand warmers work well) but that probably wont be an issue right now.

There are tutorials knocking about on the internet, Here's a short example with pictures showing how to ship a tarantula http://www.reptileforums.co.uk/forums/spiders-inverts/859460-how-not-post-tarantula.html The principles are exactly the same for scorpions. Most importantly you need to make sure the animal(s) can't fall about and potentially be injured during transit. For tiny scorpions like your H. spinigerus babies, you could use old film canisters or pill pots instead of the deli cup used in the thread I posted. It's up to you if you put more than one scorpion in each pot. The chances are with this species that you won't suffer any cannibalism during shipping, but it's not impossible and you'll have a displeased customer if it does occur. Personally, I'd ship them in separate pots.

Another important measure is to ensure you use a large enough box to allow at least 3''- 4'' of packing around each side of the containers holding the scorpions. This will stop the pots moving around and cushion them if the parcel is dropped etc. Newspaper works fine for this but you could use packing chips. Unnecessary expense if you ask me lol.

It is important to check the weather both where you are and where your customer is. Then you can make an informed decision whether or not to ship (too cold or too hot), or if it is necessary to add a heat pack. I'd advise sourcing heat packs made specifically for shipping animals. It's also important to site them correctly within the parcel to avoid cooking your scorpions. There's an example of this here http://scorpions.f1.to/?n1=99_packing_for_shipping. It also shows a very professional way to ship scorpions.

Here in the UK, mailing scorpions is a bit of a grey area in regards to the rules of Royal Mail so it's better to avoid any questions by not having LIVE SCORPIONS or whatever written on the parcel. A simple fragile sticker is fine. I'm not sure what the rules over in the US are but I'd check them out before you turn up at the post office. However, I believe it's a good idea to leave a note inside the parcel describing what it contains in case it ends up being opened by the wrong person for whatever reason.

You should use the fastest shipping option available/affordable to you/or the customer. Here we have a next day delivery service that is quite reasonably priced. Check out what is available to you.

I used to use those 35mm film containers for sending scorps although for the past couple of years i've been using small 1,5ml geocaching containers and 3,5ml paint pots for sending younger instars with excellent success. You can stand on those small containers without breaking or squashing them so you don't have to worry to much about a package being dropped breaking the containers within. For the small 1,5ml containers i just use a pencil to press a hole in a 45mm thick sheet of polystyrene and then press the geocaching container into the hole. It holds it snug, protects it, cuts down on the need for packing around the containers, also cuts down on the size of the package thereby decreasing shipping costs and just makes it simple and easy to ship small scorps. You just cut the polystyrene sheet to the inside measurement of your shipping box, minus 2 inches. This gives you one inch all around the polystyrene for you to add crumbled newspaper (Callum is right, newspaper is totally sufficient for absorbing general shakes, blows, drops, shakes etc), embed the packed scorps into the polystyrene, place another sheet on top, tape it and place it in the shipping box and fill the gap around it with newspaper...viola...The 3,5ml paint pots are done the same way although i use a drill to cut holes in the polystyrene sheet...I also use a few other sized containers for the larger scorps...I find all these containers on Ebay. All cost of containers/polystyrene sheeting is of course passed over to the buyer.
Despite their small size i can still press a wad of kitchen paper into the bottom of the containers, line them with kitchen roll (i place a small piece in and use a inverted paint brush to press it around the inside edge of the container) and for there still to be room for a small wad on top before sealing them. I add a drop (and only a drop) of water if necessary. If the package is expected only to be in transit for 2 or 3 days i don't even prick an air hole in the containers (allows the buyer to re-use them) although i will for longer transit times (i don't know if it's necessary though!).
I've yet to experience any DOA's.

Hm, for some reason i can't upload a pic of the containers to show you what i'm talking about but if you search for the terms i've used on Ebay you'll see what i mean.

It's got to be said Spencer that when a noob posts a question, receives good replies but then doesn't even have the normal appreciation to say cheers guys or doesn't even acknowledge that he's received replies...yeh, that noob is just setting himself up for zero replies with his next problem.
Your none reply has already tipped the scales for me so that from now on i won't bother answering questions from you or other noobs. You're not the first as it seems that rude, don't care less kinda behaviour is pretty standard amongst many freshly signed in members... i've just had enough of it.
