Blattella germanica and/or Periplaneta americana as feeders? Empty
PostSubject: Blattella germanica and/or Periplaneta americana as feeders?   Blattella germanica and/or Periplaneta americana as feeders? Empty3/17/2013, 2:40 pm

I have been poking around the fora here, and the internet in general, trying to discern whether either of these options will act as suitable feeders for scorpions. I am sure the scorpions will consume them, but rather the primary concern is about potential risks associated with escapes (if there are any inherent concern about the species themselves as food, for whatever reason, then please do enlighten me!). The information has been limited, which is not surprsing (why use them if one is able to use the numerous preferable species?).

I ask about these species because Canada has very restrictive laws regarding cockroaches (anything considered exotic/tropical is not going to happen). I know Blattella germanica is not restricted because the boat has already sailed. I am figuring the same will apply to Periplaneta americana, but have yet to find confirmation of this. I am going to try to get the authorites to provide a comprehensive list of the controlled species.

Blattella germanica would be a serious concern to me as an option for it would readily thrive if it escaped into the home (it seems hard to imagine preventing this from occuring at some point). I am super unconvinced going this route for feeders would be anything resembling a worthwhile consideration.

Periplaneta americana I am going to need to further investigations on. I would harbour similar concerns for they have proven themselves highly capable of survivng, but I am bit less concerned given that it is not particularly warm here and it is a noticeably dry environment. There would certainly be the concern that there would be enough residual moisture around the place to let them get by.

I am presently not at all convinced using either of these as feeders would be advisable, but given the severe restrictions Canada places on cockroaches, well, I am just considering options. I would be glad to hear any thoughts/experiences people have with these species (also any comments regarding the Canadian legal situation from anybody with knowledge on the matter).

When I was keeping only one scorpion when I first started out, I ran out of mealworms pretty quickly, so the P. americana nymphs i see running around the house become part of the menu.
This is quite a hazard for the pet as these climbers can get on anything, and they might have come in contact with harmful substances.
Fortunately I now have my own colony of B. lateralis.

If you do plan to use them as feeders, you may want to capture a few adults and keep them like you would normally, both of those species breed quickly. When you get egg cases, isolate them and let them hatch in a separate enclosure, once you have enough, dispose of the first adults, and start your colony from the second generation. Basically you're captive breeding them.

I dont think anyone's ever done it, pretty interesting if someone succeeds.

Good luck
