PostSubject: H. Petersii broken claw   H. Petersii broken claw Empty3/21/2014, 6:53 pm

Ok, so I purchased a second H. Petersii. I'm 99% positive he is from the same brood as my first. I get it home and set it in with it's my current male, being all dense and stupid only to see them having a smack down over the burrow. Housing is a 10 gallon aquarium with water dish (I have hides but find they quickly abandon them for burrows as I supply generous substrate). I spend an hour and a half GENTLY breaking up the fight. Once they're separated i took them out, destroyed all burrows and added hides.

I finally noticed that my male is missing part of the lower caliper on his left pedipalp. I feel terrible for being so stupid. I should have known to destroy all territories before introducing a new individual.

Are there any recommendations regarding the care for the injured male?

is it an adult already? If not then wait til it molts. Most scorpions with injured pedipalps normally function and eat well as long as they can subdue their prey. giving it prey via tongs definitely helps also. just make sure the injured part is well treated to prevent mites or other organisms from sniffing out the injury. i have one H. hottentotta that had an injured pedipalp as well and became immobile for a few weeks then recovered

i can't be 100% sure of the age because I bought them from a local pet store. But judging from the size, i think its safe to say they still have one or two molts left.

Also, with the exception of proper environment, feeding and observation, what treatment can I perform for the injury to prevent mites or other exploiters? I'm rather ignorant about this medical aspect.

Are there clear fluids oozing out from the wound? If there are none then just leave it be. If there is some fluid oozing out then just keep it clean and dry by swabbing it with some clean q-stick. Not really sure if it can apply to scorps but in injured tarantulas, super glue helps and usually after the next molt everything is okay

No oozing. I'm thinking they're right around fifth instar. So it will take it a while for them to molt again.
Thank you for the help. l just want to make sure I give them what they need.
