PostSubject: Any advice regarding external parasites please?   3/8/2014, 11:14 am

I have a juvenile emperor who stopped eating and seemed weak. I checked it out and it was covered in tiny white eggs. They were stuck onto the scorp on the softer areas of its body.

I removed as many as I could with a soft toothbrush and a paintbrush. I then applied some Vaseline. The eggs seemed to die off and the scorp improved and ate something two days ago.

I thoroughly cleaned its container our and have been keeping it a little drier. It has a heat source.

I checked it out today and it has two sore, red spots on it and there's a few eggs round its mouth area. I cleaned the sore areas with some saline on the end of a cotton bud and tried to remove the eggs, but they're pretty stuck on.

What should I do now? The scorp is active and seems well, but I don't want these eggs to re-infest and what should I do about the sore areas? The scorp just walks around when I'm trying to clean it, so it's hard to make sure I'm getting everything off.

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

That sounds like a mite infestation. Try to rehouse your emp for now and replace all the substrate. Then thoroughly wash the enclosure with bleach and water. Put a shallow water dish once your done. I think i read somewhere here that swabbing your scorp with a q-stick dipped in vinegar will help in preventing a mite reinfestation

Hi, thanks for replying. I've since discovered that they're hypopus stage grain mites. I've found one mite running on the scorp just now. I've been changing the substrate daily and washing everything down with hot water then drying well. I've ordered some predator mites from a pest control website, so they might help too. I'm trying to keep the scorps as dry as I can and washing their water container out every few hours as I've heard that the mites will head for that because they need moisture.

The scorps seem okay in themselves and one of them as eaten a cricket yesterday. The sore areas on the scorp have fully healed up now. It's angry, but coping okay at the moment.

It sounds like you're taking the correct measures to get rid of them. I've used the method of keeping the enclosure dryer with great success, and whilst I've not used predatory mites for pest mites I did use them to get rid of a fruit fly/phorid fly problem and they worked a treat.

You'd be unlikely to lose a healthy scorpion to this type of mite so I'm sure they'll recover well.
