Heya! Am a newbie. last two days I caught up and learned so much about scorpions and am hooked. I captured this little fellow (which started this curiosity trip into the world of scorpions) and now am wondering if I can keep him and grow him. Am also wondering if I have to watch out for his mommy as I bring my little kids with me to my desert camp every weekend.

From searching on the web and looking at images I think it is a Paruroctonus xanthus or baergi. Just from image comparison and general charactristics I think it is paruroctonus but not sure which.

Also, I can tell it is a baby one (or not, still not clear on how to surely identify) so we may never know until he is fully grown. I want to keep him :-) so now am looking into the best desert habitat to put him in, but it will be great if I can identify my little one first :-)

thanks for the help in advance. I have ordered my black light and at least I will be doing my homework and looking around my tent and beddings before i put the children in them. My tent is huge (6 meters x 4 meters) and has no flooring so not sure this is of help but I will do it anyhow!

Let me know your thoughts guys!

Hello, and welcome to the forum.

It's definitely not Paruroctonus xanthus, as this species is found in North America.

It's difficult to see what species it is. Can you take a clear picture, rather than shaky video?

However, it doesn't look like it is Leiurus quinquestriatus, but don't quote me on that. Be careful handling scorpions you haven't got a definite ID for.

Here's a list of scorpions found in Qatar taken from http://scorpiones.pl/maps/#asia

Buthidae

Androctonus crassicauda
Apistobuthus pterygocercus
Buthacus leptochelys
Buthacus nigroaculeatus
Compsobuthus arabicus
Leiurus quinquestriatus

Scorpionidae

Scorpio maurus

I'm looking forward to seeing what else you find Very Happy

This is most certainly a buthacus species.

Hey everyone.  Thanks for the warm welcome to this community.

Callum B, i have included a clearer picture.  Note the link on top of the video on my original post.  Hope this helps more.

Tongue Flicker, thanks :-)

Smokehound714, I do agree that it definitely falls under buthacus species.  the general attributes fit.  I still need to run a more accurate identification as my 2 year old comes camping with me every weekend in the desert so the matter is serious to me beyond my newly found curiosity.

My black light is on its way - thanks amazon - I hope i get it before this weekend.  I also order 10" tongues to help me catch them.  Am excited.  Note hunting in the sand is going to be more challenging as merely pointing the light at night may not reveal them.  I have to gently move peal a few layers of sand before i can see them.  i will also hunt around my areas for holes matching a scorpion signature.

Will let you know what i find.  meanwhile, I hope the pictures help in a better identification!  thanks.

Having trolled the net for photos on the list, am more leaning towards Buthacus leptochelys....
