PostSubject: Are my setup for my Emperor scorpion right?   Are my setup for my Emperor scorpion right? Empty9/1/2013, 9:16 pm

Ive just gotten a Baby Emperor scorpion for about 1 month ago. the one who sold me it told me to use coco humus, it was a Brick first wich i had to add about 1Liter (galoon) of water to it. and the substrate in the cage looks very very wet. it doesnt even look close to the desert. so is it Dry sand im gonna use as i see in pictures? or continue use coco humus until it becomes dry? the setup looks like this Are my setup for my Emperor scorpion right? 2llzj1w

You can see with the Light from camera on the substrate how wet it is.
I own a G rosea tarantulla from before so i have a bit experience with animal with Poison and venom. but the spider just want it dark all the time as ive been told. but the spider is in a 300Galoon Tank, so its very big for the spider.

Do i have the tank for my scorpion right? or what do it need? i love to give everything whos the best for my pets so tell me what im missing and il get that. should i dry the cocos humus?

Pandinus imperators love it humid and they come from the rainforests in Africa so I don't know why they told you they like the desert...

The type of substrate is fine but make sure that he has at least 4 inches of substrate to dig around in. How big is the scorpion? We shure would like to see pictures. How big is his home?

His home is not so very big, il take more pictures. i was told by the seller of the scorpion until it become bigger it not good to have a big tank. the Scorpion is a baby, and very Aggresive. sometimes when im trying to change water in the waterpool like i do once a day he sometimes moving towards my hand. sometimes i need to pick the waterpool up with a tool. i know the Venom is like Bees but i still dont take the change of getting bit.

Ok. The seller was right not to have a big home. He would have a harder time finding food and water. The reason why he is probably so defensive is because he is in a new home and the fact that younger scorpions are more skittish than adults.

That fits him fine. He should have some more substrate to dig though so if you can do that it would cut down on his stress. Just give him an adult dubia weekly but they dig somtimes so I find that pulling off the front two legs of the dubia prevents the roach from hiding. If you put it in at night like the seller said that works well. Just don't put it too close. They like to ambush prey.

Also, from his size and the color of his telson, he looks to be a subadult if that helps you out any. Have fun with it. It's fun watching them at night.

Yeah the dubias often goes into the Moose and hide, so ive started to put a flat stone ontop of it so the dubia cant hide in there. i couldnt pull a leg of the dubias. sounds to mean to em, as dubias have feelings too i believe. so il rather want the scorpion to kill it by Nature. Im a very animal Lover to any animals, even Insects. But thanks for the info.
Does i need a Heat mat under it or what temprature is best for it?

And what do you mean by Subadult? thats its closer to an adult then a baby?

I understand too. It's not fun to do that but it's better than having your scorpion starve. They like both temperature and humidity around 80 so if you put a heat mat on, do it on the side so the scorp doesnt burn when they dig to escape heat. Heat lamps work too.

Subadult means that the scorpion is like a teenager, Not a baby, but not fully grown.

Yeah i could get a tank so i use for my praying mantises, they are high but not so very big in size just taller so i could get a heat lamp over it, how far above it should the lamp be? i could get about 5 Inches of cocos substrate and put a heat map under the cage also. but yeah it would get warmer then if hes digging to get away from heat. how would it work to put a heat map on the side? would have to get small heat mats then.

could also get something like this Are my setup for my Emperor scorpion right? 2gy9951

its a string wich gives heat just like mats, so i could put this on the sides of the cage. would probly be easier then useing a mat?

Don't put the heat mat under the cage. If you put it on the side, that works fine. I know some people use heat cable like you mentioned, just make sure they aren't in the cage obviously. It's really up to you and whatever suits your needs and does the job.

I use some of those heat cables and they are great to use but if it isn't stuck on nice and neat it looks a bit crappy. What's great about the cable is that you can adjust it easily to get better heat in certain areas of the enclosure.

Nah got a idea about useing some strong glue on the outside of the cage, and how the cage looks doesnt matter for me aslong the scorpion has it good. should i put the string close the the cocs humus or a bit above it? like 2-3Inches.

Before heating your enclosure, get yourself a thermometer so you can monitor the temperature.  An inexpensive dial thermometer that you stick to the side of the tank is sufficient and can be purchased at most pet stores.  I like the small digital thermometers like this one.

But to pick them up, should i use a box like this person on here do youtube.com/watch?v=ehUcfYPySmw

or should i pick him up by the tail? how hard are theyre tail so i dont hurt him in anyways. Want to try to hold him.

and ive seen another movie where the person hold his hand a bit back of his tail and then uses his hand to make the scorpion to go backwards into your hand. wich one is best. i know Scorpions and spiders isnt something you should hold and i know what can happend.

Is it possible to tame a scorpion? ive managed to tame my Praying mantises and those are insect, but ive readen they are very Intelligence maybe its why i managed to tame em. My spider sometimes walk into my hand so i believe ive been able to tame him a little.

You can place the wire a inch or two above the substrate because heat rises so it's best to keep it down low against the enclosure.
If you are adamant on holding it you can just place one hand flat on the surface where it is and scoot it onto your hand with a paint brush or something similar. Just remember to handle him over something soft like your bed and close to it so if it falls it won't get hurt.

Some scorpions are parthenogenetic(the females produce genetic clones of themselves) but Emps aren't so you will need an adult pair.
You can have a look here on how to tell the gender: http://allscorpionarchives.forumotion.com/t39-sexing-pandinus-spp-and-heterometrus-spp

Yeah ive checked what gender my scorpion is. and sent pictures to the sellers so he will ship a scorpion from the other gender so i can make babies.

But i have now got my HeatCable and installed it around the cage. should i have the heatcable on 24/7? or should it be off for some hours a day?

Looks like the scorpion is trying to get higher and closer to the heat cables, is it normal Razz?
Since they crawl under the dirt to get cold.
