what kinda substrate should i use?

ive been looking and i hear that sometimes people can keep these communal. but should i?

would not recommend communal unless you have a very large cage. use play sand or reptile sand saturate it with water let the sand dry out completely so there is no moisture left in the sand. The more substrate the better (5"-6") the desert hairys like to make elaborate burrows. A good rule with any scorpion that burrows is have alot of substrate.

You want a substrate that when dry will hold its shape and support tunnels and burrows.  A mixture of 20% Excavator Clay and 80% play sand works well.  Other keepers use sand mixed with a thin slurry of dissolved pottery clay in water.  The clay acts as a binder; pure sand alone won't hold its shape. The substrate should be moist when added to the enclosure, tamped down and allowed to dry.  H. arizonensis are obligate burrowers and need deep substrate, 8"-10" is recommended.

Communal colonies of Hadrurus usually result in one scorpion eating the others.

were do you get the clay at? lol

Most pet stores carry Excavator Clay; it's in the reptile section.  Pottery clay can be found at art and craft stores.  Buy your sand from Lowes or Home Depot (or equivalent).
