PostSubject: Found a baby, but odd situation   Found a baby, but odd situation Empty8/8/2013, 11:40 am

So first of all I’d like to point out that I check up on all my scorps at least once a week maybe more often than that the last couple weeks. Yesterday I check on my C.sculpt enclosure and I see something tiny move really quick in between the soil. I know that a month or so ago some baby crickets popped up but this little thing didn’t move like a cricket and at a quick glance it moved like a scorpion. So I shine my blacklight in there and I see two little scorplings already molted to 2i one was dead the other very much alive. I never saw them on moms back. I’m willing to admit since it was only two I probably over looked them when I would check up but I don’t think I would do that. My other hypothesis is that she gave birth and they never climbed on her back and lucky for me the substrate has been moist it probably got enough humidity to molt on it’s own…this also seems unlikely but conceivable

Go with your first thoughts Ed...the latter is a little to far fetched Wink besides, i had a R.princeps not so long ago that also gave me a brood of 2 which i first discovered when i saw one of them wandering around the substrate......so it's not that unusual...it happens Wink

Yeah I know it's hard to accept a 1i surviving but the conditions were hot and humid similar to what you would do in an ICU. Like I said I'm skeptical that this is the case but I think I would have noticed the baby since I do inspect my scorpions for mites and signs of mycosis.

Think about it .. Getting abandoned 1i's through moult to 2i is really only successful when the 1i's are kept in reasonably sterile conditions.
Being on the mothers back, they benefit from the mothers natural defences. For example, we secret sweat that helps keep the skins Ph low which in turn offers us a certain amount of protection against micro organisms....most other animals, inverts included have also developed similar safeguards in one form or another.
Your normal run of the mill enclosure will be home to countless species of micro organism's with extra warmth and humidity only increasing the variety and amounts.
Therefore i would imagine any 1i's not offered the protection of their mothers immune system would quickly succumb if just left to themselves on the substrate floor.....even a reasonably clean (to the eye) one.

Well I agree. I know what the most logical scenario is, and I'm not arguing. I'm simply stating that I checked up on her often and didn't see a baby.
