| What sort of info would you like? I have learnt that Pandinus *and im sure others* are protective of their siblings during a moult. Ive seen one moulting and been watching quietly and siblings all of a sudden came rushing out, surrounded and began "stinging" at me! A scorpion who has given birth and with babies on her back KNOWS when she is being watched! I dont know how but she just does and will turn to face the human! And by this I mean ive come in, started staring in the tank *only slightly* and in trying to be still, I hear my heart beat and when I heard that...at that moment she would turn *I wonder if they can feel the pulse!* Urm...cant think of any strange things ive discovered at the moment... xxxx | |

| sometimes in communal tanks if one scorp is moulting and you put your hand in, the others have been known to sort of guard the molting one | |

| There has been hybrids Cave dwellers have no eyes Their ancestors date back to the Silurian(425-450 million years ago)
Early scorpions where aqutic, marine, or amphibious like crabs/ Lobsters
Cannablism is prominent
the mating dance
Some have parthenogenesis capabilities
They molt
UV
Found in all land masses except antartica
Some are capable of resisiting sub-zero temps by preventing crystalization

| yeah i've had pandinus sp. be very protective of a sloughing tank mate.
dont know if its any use but the parabuthus pallidus i used to have, i actually used to handle. between 9 and 10am and about 8-9pm, it was at its most docile between waking up properly and going to sleep. during these times it never attempted to tag or nip me. However any time between those times it was incredibly aggressive and would attack!
I also found my pandinus scorpions could be trained. every tuesday when i bought my crickets, in the morning i would knock on the tank, then i'd knock again when the food was about to be offered... and after a couple of months they recognised what the knocking meant and would all appear out of their burrows in hunting mode before the crickets were tipped into the tank.
I had a pandinus cavimarus that used climb up an exo terra vine, then hold on with its peds, hanging underneath the vine and work its way across, like how you would go across monkey bars. and it wasn't a one off she used to do it a couple of times a week.
I had an asian hissing that worked out how to open a hinged wooden lid (this being a 4foot lid and some weight for a scorpion to push!) and escaped... found two days later after in the downstairs bog. I'd come in from a night out straight to the bog, turned on the light and just as i was about to take another step forward i heard a hiss like a snake, when i looked down and under my foot it had its peds and stinger ready to attack me! That just might have hurt methinks!
and my Hadogenes Paucidens, whenever i cleaned the tank out used to do its own rearranging of the decor. i had a load of smashed up tiles that were carefully placed to create loads of crevices like they have in the wild. And you could guarantee that when i put her back into the tank. she would go under the tiles and using her whole body would move the tiles a centimeter this way and that until they were, in her opinion in the correct place. Even pulling tiles with her peds then going back under to see if she had moved the particular tile enough. After an hour or so and when she was happy with her arrangement she would go in and sit with claws out waiting for the net dumb cricket to come her way. And she did this everytime i cleaned the tank!
Im sure there was some other stuff... if i remember i'll write them down for ya.

| Toxins are single chain vasic proteins containing 60-70 amino acids, minus a few(C.noxious). 25 scorpions are conisdered medically significant Heterometrus scaber only scorpion to have hemotoxin unlike the others which have nuerotoxin.
The targets of the scorpion toxins are Volatage dependent Na+ an K+

| some insects use Spiders as hosts for their eggs/larvae, no documentention of that in scorpions
Lethal temps range from 45-47C -5C to -9.5C have been recorded to be tolerated by Vaejovis species
Three potential water sources... preformed water(water, food, water from substrate) Atmospheric water And Metabolic water
urodacus and heterometrus have been known to detect light with their metasoma after their "eyes" where covered
Each species of the het/Urodacus sensed light at differnt areas in the metasoma and activity peaked at different wavelenghts Scorpions have refused food with sodium chloride and started cleanign its chelicerae meanign they could have a primitive form of taste.
Scorpion is immune to it's own venom because of toxin nuetralization by the hemolymph. If venom is injected into a nerve ganglion though, the scorpion dies.
Some scorpions hiss(Stridulate) to threats Rubbing pedipal and first legs, Friction between chelicaere and cephalothrax, scrapign the sting along mesasoma, and the pectines alone the sternite. Also Scorpio Mauris strikes the ground.
Males do sporadic juddering. It is thought to be a highly rituzlized sex/specie recognition behavior, done for female to cooperate, or just a byproduct of intense sexual excitement.
The male may sting female for 3-20 minutes, It's not known is the female is envenomated, if she is she may be drugged to calm down here aggressiness

I think you guys beat me to all the good stuff . . . Scorpions only molt a specific number of times, unlike other primitive arthropods that molt throughout their lives. A component of deathstalker venom has shown promise in cancer therapy. (Look up: chlorotoxin)

| Btw you might wanna read up abit on Hemiscorpius lepturus, Its considered one of the most dangerous scorpions in the world, yet its pretty unknown.. it has a highly cytotoxic venom, wich can give you some serious problems.. | |

| yeah there a bit of information on how chlorotoxin works in that last link i put up. If i read right it's the only toxin that has the capability to penetrate brain tissue thus making it an extremely good candidate to be the building block for fighting brain tumors.
Incredible how something so dangerous could one day do the exact opposite and save lives.
This thread has put me on one and been reading loads, i didn't go to bed until about 1am this morning reading various papers and lectures on the net.

| Chlorotoxin is only dangerous to invertebrates -- the chloride channel it binds to is present in high quantities in the neural cells of arthropods but extremely uncommon in the neural cells of vertebrates (except, however, in cancerous cells that express that channel in abundance).
Let me upload and link a report that I did with two other people on this subject.
