Heat lamps and plants Empty
PostSubject: Heat lamps and plants   Heat lamps and plants Empty7/14/2013, 5:46 pm

I have a 50 watt zoo med day blue bulb that i don't use and I want to start adding some live plants in my C. gracilis enclosure, like maybe pothos or an ivy vine. Will that bulb be too strong for the plant and burn it? Is there any kind of bulb I can use to heat the tank and keep the plants happy? Also, what do you think I should put in the tank, pothos, ivy, or something else? Something full sun and tropical. I'm trying to go with natural environments here.

I'm not sure about the whole heat issue, but I do know that on the side that I had the heat mat for my Emperor, if I turn it on, any Pothos root almost immediately burns, and then five more grow from that.

As for the plant choice, I think pothos would be a great choice because they love that humidity. Pothos vines come from the rainforests. Also, they don't need much light at all, and get very large.

Another plant I would recommend is a philodendron. They also have the same qualities that pothos vines have, but they don't grow as tall. They do grow faster, however.

Both plants are currently battling it out in the empty Emperor enclosure. Pothos vines will grow very tall and throw their roots into any open space they can, and then grow the leaves. With the philodendrons, they have shorter "roots", but grow like five at a time, and will prevent all light from reaching the areas below. Both are also in straight Eco earth with nothing else and do fine without any fertilizer of any sort.

+1 on the philodendron! Great, hardy plants.

Post some pics when you get done! I can't wait to see it.

Hey bro,

Try a repti glo 2.0 from exo terra, it stimulates plant growth, you planted Hedera Helix and a Fern?

Hedera is a soldier among plants it can survive a lot of conditions...not too much water tho Wink

The fern likes a bit of humidity...

Both are plants that are able to grow in shade, and they can tolerate lower lighting conditions....
