| Hey guys. Sorry to bother again. You know how it is when you expand interests in a hobby with this many particulars and variables and stuff. Sorry if I'm getting annoying.
I found a nice P. transvaalicus pair locally that I'm really really interested in, but the girlfriend isn't too keen on it because of the possibility of spraying.
Is the spraying really a huge issue? Do they do it often?

| Hey there! I have never experianced any spraying by them before or any Parabuthus species. I really can't recount any spraying incident by anyone either. There is a short video of a P. trans spraying on youtube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OzTvbpmwcXw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5G6iHAvCxY. So they can spray but it most likely will be a rare occurance. I highly doubt you would see them spray unless you really pissed them off and they felt they have no other choice to do so. I believe it's use is a last resort in a life or death incident. More of a survival attribute. Once again, I myself have never seen it happen before. | |

| Thanks! I hope more people can chime in and say the same thing. I really want these guys and she is really freaked out by the possibility. Lol. Says she has this gut feeling that we're gonna get sprayed through the enclosure. | |

Hahahahaha.... Well, I would like me and my 8 legged army to have a place to live and get electricity for heat lamps. Lol. Although, I do live in South/Cental Texas, so I guess heat wouldn't too big of an issue right now...

| If I put a glass/plexi top on an enclosure instead of a screen one and drilled holes around the edges for ventilation do you think it would get too humid in there for one of these guys? | |

I know there is the jk after, but Eddy does have a very valid point. Give the trans a good deal of respect and it'll be one of the coolest scorpions you'll ever get the pleasure of owning. I've been breeding this species for at least 3 years that I can recall "kinda lost track of time" and I really can't imagine not keeping them as part of my line up. I'll also second the rare occurrence of spraying bit. I've successfully pissed off hundreds upon hundreds of these guys (no exaggeration) and I've only gotten a few to spray a little, mostly they tend to form a bit of milky venom on the tip of their aculeus and flick it or sting my tweezers. If you're really worried about it, you can buy a pair of impact goggles or cheap chem lab goggles to wear while working with them. Another option, if you want to be funny, is exaggerate the potential of their venom spraying ability and make your girlfriend wear the goggles every time she's in that room for a stretch of time in response to her opposition. Of course you should, at some point, break the news to her that it was all bull. - TheKevil wrote:

Unfortunately, restricted ventilation is a bad idea with these guys. They don't get mycosis too easy, but restricted ventilation is always a bad idea with arid specimens.

| Bahahahahahaha. I'm all about trolling. Sounds like a plan.
I'm trying to convince her. Right now, I'm thinking taking a 10g and putting drilled plexi on it for a lid and using fake plants instead of live so I don't have to water them and throwing the pair in there. I know their humidity levels are supposed to be super low. I'm just worried about humidity building up in there with a solid top instead of screen.

| She gave in! Yay! Sorta... She's doing the whole guilt trippy thing. Lol. "I know you really really want it, so ok. I'm just not gonna be comfortable for a while."
It's still a yes, though, right? Lol. Good enough for me, I guess.

| Haha, good deal. P. Trans are nice. I'm still trying to convince my wife to me let start tarantula keeping. I got scorpions and had snakes, geckos, a nile monitor but for some reason, she keeps saying no to tarantulas.... | |

| Damn! Nevermind... Homeboy wants $150 for the P. trans pair! He likes them a lot. Vixvy's selling his adult pairs for $70 plus the $50 shipping which would save me $30. I think I'll just go through him instead.
Although... He did just post that he has something coming for those of us that joined the forum before 2013... Maybe I should wait until he posts what he has up his sleeve...

| Congrats on the... well.. really accepting and supporting girlfriend. And I hope a very nice future P. Trans Very cool, she respects your hobby and supports that even though she might feel uncomfortable for a while. She does it for you, and that's very generous. She must Love you very much. Back to scorps. P. Trans... What can I say, very high on my (gonna buy as soon as I have a place of my own and get settled) want list. As with a lot of scorpions, how you treat them is very important. You can learn to detect nervousness, you can learn to recognize if it is in a relaxed mode or hungry hunt mode. How does it respond to vibrations in it's surroundings? Sounds, the moving of tank items, does it become nervous? Or just plain aggressive ? Of course there is always the risk that it sprays venom. It can and if provoked, it will. If you haven't much experience with Buthidae, I recommend wearing some kind of protection, just to be sure, whilst you get to know the specimen. If you do have more experience, I think you can minimize the risk but not exclude it completely. For instance, I can open my A. Bicolor tank when she is out in the open. She scurries and hides, or sometimes just stays where she sits. At that moment I am extra careful. I know that even though she gives the illusion of being completely tranquil, she can explode at any second. If I see her in a non-defence posture just chilling, I am secure enough to do what I need to do and close the tank again. I am still learning much, because I just got her 2 weeks ago. You need to understand and get to know the scorpion. Then in time when you get more secure and know what triggers a defensive posture with that particular specimen, you can anticipate and prevent high risks of getting the animal stressed, and/or defensive. Than the chances of getting sprayed with venom will decrease I think. Take care, Joey | |

| Yes sir. She is a great one, for sure. I'm happy. Thanks for the great advice. I picked them up from the guy and I'm already loving the species! Amazing temperament. They've already let me handle them without any issues. No sign of aggression whatsoever. It honestly felt like I was holding an emp. | |

| On the Tarantula deal with the boss, do what I did. Buy a nice one and tell her it was bought for her. Works everytime. | |
