PostSubject: C. vittatus homosexuality   6/22/2013, 10:10 pm

Alright.... This sounds crazy, I know, but I swear it happened. Unfortunately, it was over quickly after I noticed it so I was unable to get a video, but I have pictures of the receiving scorpion and the spermatophore deposit.

So I was checking on my C. vits when I noticed that there was some peculiar behavior going on. There were two males, chela locked, one seeming to try to mate with the other. Between them, there was a spermatophore deposit. The receiving scorp put up with it for a few seconds from what I could see, then, before I could get my camera, it swiped the other with it's tail, ending the "encounter".†

Maybe I'm wrong and maybe the receiving scorp was, indeed, female, but I've always read that super long tail, skinny body meant male. Just in case, here is a picture of the one on the receiving end of it all. I also am including a picture of the spermatophore deposit. It's not an amazing picture, but when everything was going on, it was all gooey and had "strings" coming from it, so I'm almost positive that's what it was.

Receiving scorp

Comparison of scorp in question to female of same species so you can see the difference in tail length.

Caught them doing it again! Same two scorpions. And I got a video. There was no spermatophore involved this time around.†Now, just as a background on the receiving scorpion... He is freshly post molt. Just molted about 3 days ago. C. vits are communal, though, and I figured that if one was attempting to eat the other that there would be some stinging involved.

Here ya go...

Really? Interesting. I wonder what causes it. I've never heard of homosexual behavior in scorpions before. At first I thought it was territorial dominance, but when I look at videos of that kind of thing it always shows a full on fight. This looks more like courtship.

This is sometimes observed in tarantulas as well; and not just with other mature males, but with sexually immature individuals of both sexes. A likely conclusion is that the male becomes confused by the presence of other scorpions (possibly females nearby) is so eager to pass on his genes that they attempt to mate with any other scorp they encounter. It is likely that the male's vigorous attempts at mating also confuse the other individual into complying. Another possibility is that they both are under the impression that they are mating with a female.
