| I know there are a lot of these threads, but evidently I am very bad at this... Somehow when trying to 'guess' the sex in other threads, I was wrong more often than not. So it would be nice to have some real confirmation. Here is a pic of my emp's underbelly:  There are some water drops in the image because the tank had been recently misted. If I should take another let me know. At first I thought it could be a male because the pectines were on the larger side, but now I'm not so sure anymore. Any guesses??? | |

| i would guess male but could do with a clearer pic.
put it in a cricket or similar tub then using a load of tissue or a cloth gently pin him to the bottom then turn it over that way it wont move an you can get a clear pic | |

| So I wasn't able to get them to stay still for a photo today (all the photos still have this bad motion blur) but I did take another look, and as well at some others in this subforum. And I noticed this - Shakudo, is this what you were talking about?  It looks like a female characteristic (from looking at other threads)... | |

| Any chance you could get a zoomed out pic?
When sexing emps, it's actually easier to go by the size of the pectines compared to the body.
Anyway, looks male to me.
Operculum shape can vary, but females will always have a distinct partial split in the operculum plate pointing towards the metasoma that I don't see here. (However, the flash could be obscuring it.) | |
