Here I am with questions again! Very Happy hehe

Can you guys tell me what gender you think my redclaw is? And if possible what rough age she is and whether I should be expecting her to moult again? Also, what ages to redclaws normally live till? Thanks!!

Pectines (i hope these are good enough to gauge an idea!)

And here is her next to a standard sized lighter. Cannot find a ruler to save my life!! Just next to something so you guys can see how big she is

Hello Jen,

At first glance I would say male.

But if you can, please take a good clear, sharp pic of it's underside I can't see the genital operculum very well, but from what I could say looked more oval and not heart shaped, and would give me the idea of male.

Regarding lifespan, I mostly read "over 10 years:)" that makes me happy , because I have one too;)

What age... well very hard to tell but I'd guestimate, a later instar about 5 /6 perhaps subadult I think one or 2 molts and it will be mature. But don't pin me on that.

Take care!!!

I think that with Pandinus cavimanus the telson will turn black when an adult. As for instar, that would mean 7th instar. Yours will not molt again, and can now breed if you can find a member of the opposite sex.

I can't tell the gender however because the picture is too unclear as previously stated.

Ohh well male or not male, Bonnie is still going to be Bonnie, and referred to as "she" haha. Thanks Shakudo- wow I didn't realise it was that long! That's fabulous! I hope she lives to a "bonny" old age Wink. Sorry, that was terrible.

Thanks Shredder emp- the first picture was taken in HD Sad . Lol! Shows how good I am with a camera on HD setting. I will try to get a better picture but that first picture was the best I have gotten in days. I know the others are quite blurry.

I am not sure how to get her to keep still enough to get a good photo. I saw the thread on "squishing" her with a towell but I think I am too nervous to try that in case I hurt her!

I don't think I want to breed her, especially not now- maybe if Bronson turns out to be a female but I doubt it lol! So she won't moult again? That's a shame- would have been nice to see a moult, although i guess I am glad I won't have to worry about any moulting complications Smile

Sorry but thats not correct. My Cavi is juvenile and has a black telson. And I know 100% sure she is not mature.
As for this scorp and adult can reach 15 cm a lighter is not 15 cm I really don't think this is an adult.
My those are my thought.

Thanks, I wasn't sure so I based it what I know from Pandinus imperator, as the telson gets darker it is older. I just assumed that instar because I looked it up and saw an ad for a 7th instar one with a black telson. Guess I should do better research. Haha.

the picture is unclear but I believe sub adult female based on the spacing between pectines and length.

Male P. cavimanus have a pronounced tooth on the tarsus (movable part of the claw), females do not.

Pandinus cavimanus sexual dimorphism.

Based on its size, I also don't think Jen's scorpion is an adult.

Well I'm quite pleased to hear she is not quite an adult yet- means I will hopefully have more time with her :-D.
As for gender, I have tried to leave her alone completely so she'll eat but it's been like 4 days now and she hasn't touched either hoppers iv left in there, so I am gonna wait till she eats before I stress her out again trying to get another pic.

But general consensus seems to be female so yay! Haha

Definitely female.

The easiest way to tell (as the link Richard gave shows quite well) is that males have a large "dent" in their chela.

I've been on a role with sexing using pectines for almost all species. Training with Kari Mcwest has given me an eye for the differences.
