Noobie here Empty
PostSubject: Noobie here   Noobie here Empty5/9/2013, 9:49 am

Hello to everyone of the forum! I'm new to the forum and keeping a scorpion. I got my emperor yesterday and all seems to be going well. She ate 2 crickets last night (which I enjoyed watching), and the temperature and humidity are pretty well and earlier she was sitting in her little hideout. Today I am getting new substrate as well. However, one of the pet shop workers said that the bulbs in the kit don't contain any UV rays, but I feel that they might. So I was wondering how you tell whether an IR bulb emits heat or not? Thanks for any assistance I can get Smile

Welcome man.

Just be sure to only feed it one cricket at a time, because too much in one sitting ca sometimes make them sick. IR and ceramic heat emitters are the ideal choice for scorps, and they do not contain UV. If it's UV you're worried about, just avoid using any "Day blue", "UVB" or just plain "Black light" bulbs. Buy a 50 watt IR bulb and it should keep the tank nice and warm.

(Perhaps one of the Mods would like to move this topic to the introduce yourself section?)

Oh OK I did not know that it could make the sick, thanks for that. I don't know how to tell whether the IR would emit any heat or just be red light, but I'm sure it'll say on the box.
I didn't know whether to put it there or not because it pertained to my emp, but if it would be better there then by all means, one of the mods can move it to that section

It's within topic, If you'd like you can start a new thread on the introduce youself section so we can get to know you. But either way welcome, and congrats on your first scorpion.

IR stands for Infrared which is thermal radiation, i.e., heat. Any bulb labeled as IR or Infrared is a heat bulb. The red light produced is merely a side effect but comes in handy for night viewing as scorpions are less sensitive to red light. The inexpensive red incandescent "party bulbs" can also be used since all incandescent bulbs produce heat, but they won't produce as much heat as an equal wattage IR bulb or ceramic heat element.
