PostSubject: Set Up Time!   11/2/2009, 6:37 am

Hey everyone, some of you may remember a while ago me asking various questions about setting up an asian forest tank? Well I have now got everything and have got back off holiday so its all systems go! Im currently watching my 2 bricks of substrate expand in the water I can then start the decor! I'm going to ring the local reptile shop and ask what they have got in they may have to order an asian forest but hey whats a few more days? I plan to get a baby and watch it grow! Is this a good choice?

I will post pictures when I'm done!
P.S Hope everyone had a good halloween!

If it's a big tank, I'd suggest several babies.

Oh ok, why is that? are babies harder to look after? I have just done my substrate but instead of doing 1 brick with 4 litres i did 2 bricks with 8.5 litres and well i think I havent got enough substrate and its to damp =[

yea there a bit more sensitive. go for a couple of 4i scorps and you will get 2 more moults till adult so probably over a year and that way your not getting some old one with a few weeks left.
look around a bit. you can often find a better deal on the internet. ill have a look for you.

i reckon you should be ok rearing young ones as long as you get the conditions right and have small enough food.
found a few:
http://www.bugzuk.com/scorpionsandwhipscorpions.htm
there cheap but i dont know how good they are so you might have to ask some customers.
your not specifying what species exactly you want so you might like Heterometrus madraspatensis. they look like the other species but have yellow legs:
http://www.martingoss.co.uk/
he is a good seller i have bought from him before at a show and we talked for about half an hour about scorps lol! the people waiting to buy stuff behind me weren't all that happy lol!
or you could get a few swammerdami from him which are the largest scorp in the world (i think).
another: http://www.southcoastexotics.com/inverts.php
and another: http://www.virginiacheeseman.co.uk/scorpions-c-32.html?osCsid=cf820506d35de05770596cdbd769b8e9
thats all i can find for now.
hope it helps.

Sorry what does 4i mean? I think I'm just going to stick to the 1 for now. I never thoguht about ordering over the internet isn't it cruel? Is it even legal? lol I'm after an asian forest scorpion I think as that is what I have based my set up as, i.e the type of substrate the bark etc. Heterometrus spinifer I think the name is? But I'd be happy with another type of species if things suit.

Also what does juveniele mean?

Juvenile = baby/infant from 1i to about 3i
Sub-adult = A larger scorp that has not yet reached maturity 4i to 6i (i think, might be 7i with females)
Adult = Fully matured

You can tell with a lot of scorps by the colour of their telson;
white = juvenile
yellow/cream = sub-adult
brown/red = adult

However, some sp have say black telsons their whole lives.

Hope this helps Smile

Buying over the net isn't cruel or illegal; it's standard practice.

And Binky's rule of thumb only works for emperors and a couple species of Heterometrus.

By the way, 4I means "fourth instar," which isn't the same as fourth molt - it means it's molted three times in its life. They're born at 1I and after the first molt they're 2I, and so on and so forth.
