PostSubject: Florida Bark   6/16/2008, 7:39 pm

When I bought 3 Emperors the guy at the shop gave me one of these for free and I was kinda nervous not knowing too much about it. I went to pick it up by the tail and since their tails are so long it managed to get me on the tip of my finger. I look at it and I saw blood and felt the burn of the venom. I started to panic and Googled to see if it was dangerous but I figured no cause it didn't hurt too much. I haven't tried grabbing it again lol.

got a pic? it's always good to know if it's C. gracilis or C. hentzi. although you are in florida and C. gracilis is native there it's always best to err on the safe side and be weary when handling it as it's possible for it to not be one native to florida but native to central/south america or the carribean, in which case you may not be in a happy place if you get a hot sting. thus far your case sounds like a dry sting.

As Ras said, the scientific name is very useful; plus, that way we can index this thread for future reference.

Well on a scale of 1-10 i would say a 6. It did feel uncomfortable but not as bas as i thought. I dont think it was a dry sting tho cause after i felt the prick my finger felt like i was holding it over a candle. Oh and as for the picture i'll see if i can get around that soon

Thanks -- when you post a pic I can condense your report and index it as the appropriate species. Smile

I have been stung by ether a Florida Bark or a Hentz striped scorpion...didn't get a great look and it was so long ago too. Well anyways I was in a field down the street from my house with a friend of mine when somehow the scorpion got up my pant leg. It got me right in the middle of my calf...where the skin is tight and the muscle has no fat cover. Well, to say the least it was a sharp burning sting and really hurt. When I felt the sting I pulled up my pant leg and saw the scorp and slapped it off (I know, I know, scorp murder). It was like a wasp sting, but sharper pain. As I started to walk home my leg started hurting more and it almost felt like the muscle wasn't able to flex and wasn't able to put weight on it so my friend carried me home. It stayed like that for about 30 minutes but got better very quickly and really all the symptoms were gone within an hour.
